Kindiefest 2012 Kicked It

Beth Blenz-Clucas was at Kindiefest in Brooklyn last weekend

kindiefest 2012

For folks who think children’s music begins and ends with the latest TV sensation, “kindie” will be a new concept. No one’s got an accurate count, but my estimate is that there are now literally thousands of unsigned singers and  bands making a career out of performing for kids. At last weekend’s Kindiefest (the fourth annual national family music conference in Brooklyn, NY), more than 300 of these artists showed up, networked and learned a few things to bump their careers forward.

Why is this important to the average family? Well, because the artists who come to Kindiefest, sharing their dreams and music, are the ones who will shake your soul during the coming year. It’s just that simple.

Beth Blenz-Clucas blogs about music for kids that grownups will love too

This has been an incredibly good year for kids’ music. I’ve heard so many wonderful songs for kids this year, my head is spinning.
Guaranteed, your kids will be spinning around the room, too, when they hear some of these fantastic songs from the past year. I’ve chosen the songs for their peppy musicality, high production values and lyrics that simply sing to kids.
Who doesn’t love songs about animals, friends, tuning out and avoiding
fights, especially this time of year? Each of these stellar artists is offering Bunchfamily readers a FREE SONG DOWNLOAD.
  • Alastair Moock: “These Are My Friends” – from These Are My Friends.
  • The Jimmies: “Every Day’s a Holiday” – from their CD “Practically Ridiculous.”
  • Debbie and Friends: “Walk Away” – from the Grammy-nominated CD All About Bullies Big and Small compilation.
  • The Deedle Deedle Dees: “Ah Ahimsa” – from Strange Dees, Indeed

Bedheads: The Jimmies and Trout Fishing in America

Beth Blenz-Clucas blogs about music for kids that grownups will love too

It’s Monday morning. Last night, you got the kids through the bedtime routine – bath, story, hugs, tuck-in – in record time, and now you’ll have to race to get them to the school bus on time. Trouble is, last evening’s damp hair has transmogrified overnight into a tangled mess, with strands bursting out in more directions than the L.A. freeway system.

All signs point to a mighty power-struggle between the hair brush and each kid. Or, perhaps it’s better to pour another cup of coffee, place a sprightly cap or ribbon onto those unruly locks, and head proudly out the door, singing a happy song.

The Jimmies, an NYC-based pop-rock band, created a hilarious video based on their song “Bedhead.” This Go-Go’s styled tune celebrates the wonders of the weird hairdo. Just sing along, “There’s nothing you can do” as you blithely deliver your wild-haired young’uns to the school house.

The Jimmies’ Practically Ridiculous Tip #1

Few things in life expose our un-coolness QUITE so clearly as an off-the-mark hi-five, but turns out, one TINY adjustment can yield the slappiest hi-five your palms can handle. (Get it?? Handle?? HANDle?!? Nevermind.) Anyway, all you hafta do is focus your eyes on your paddycake partner’s ELBOW instead of their hand. It’ll yield maximum slapsie contact every time!
Ridiculously yours, Ashley
OK kindie rock fans! The Jimmies will pick two winners on September 26, so get your best practically ridiculous tips into Ashley (girlfriday@gimmejimmies.com) or share them right on the Jimmies Facebook page before then. You could win a CD and a personal message from Ashley herself!
