The Gay Pension and the Need for Vacation

Meri Perra blogs about the challenges she and her partner face in trying to raise their girls with feminist values

My friends and I used to joke about a gay pension. We figured there must be one, since any time, any day, on Church Street in Toronto, there are gays (mostly men) out spending money, gathered in gay groups, having fun. No, I’m telling you. Go to the gaybourhood on one of the first beautiful days in the spring, anytime of the week, and there will be crowds. (Go, unless of course, you do not get the gay pension, and you are working.) Out on Church Street, the only folks who seem to have jobs are the ones in the bars and coffee shops. It’s like August in Italy.
