May the Fourth be with you this Star Wars Day

Star Wars is cool every day of the year, but May 4th is special. It’s Star Wars Day! The only other day besides Halloween and comic book/sci fi conventions when it’s totally OK to show up for work or school dressed as a Jedi or Imperial Storm Trooper (depending on what side of the Force you identify with). And so celebrate all things Star Wars, we must.
1. Star Wars Pancakes

If you didn’t start your day off with Star Wars pancakes, relax. They’re a perfectly normal dinner food, especially on Jedi religious holidays. Special Star Wars pancake molds are pretty easy to find, but if your midi-chlorian count is especially high, you could always try to make your own pancake AT-AT. We assume Jim of Jim’s Pancakes is a close pal of Yoda and Mace Windu. Read more...

Hello I’m Wild artists bring fictional characters into the everyday

Artists Caroline Sauvage and Marion Audefray are the creative geniuses behind the Hello I’m Wild “Headshots” series. Hello I’m Wild is a French art collective and now our favourite ever name for an art collective. With “Headshots,” they’re questioning “how different life would be if we allowed our inner child to dictate our daily activities.”
While it takes great skill to make Woody and Jessie from Toy Story playing gameboy look so natural, we think anyone could attempt a version of this series. By either dressing up as a favourite character and posing doing some totally everyday activity, or getting some action figures to do the same, you and your kids could create similarly interesting photos. This might also be a perfect time to introduce your kids to the magic of Photoshop by combining elements from two photos to create a new one. Have a talk about why it’s funny to see a Sith Lord playing with a rubber ducky. Read more...

What the cool parents are reading today:

1. Remember when the One Million Moms-types got all upset about gay marriage in the Archie comics? Now Archie and pals are stirring up more controversy with Occupy Riverdale. We so need to pick up some comics.
2. Do you have a favourite parenting philosophy, or do you find all the choices in parenting books overwhelming? One pediatrician says don’t worry about it, just love your kids and be a present parent.
3. Should airlines offer flights that are children and families only?
4. “Just because Lego is selling something doesn’t mean you need to buy it—and just because their ads are gender-biased doesn’t mean you need to follow their advertising cues.” Joshua Ostroff learned that kids will play with whatever toys they like, regardless of the toy’s gender. His 2-year-old is what you might call a Brony, a boy-fan of My Little Pony, because it’s just a good show. Read more...
Old School Still Cool
Cynthia Kinnunen blogs about sharing stuff from your childhood with your kids

He’s not Darth Vader, but he did oversee the recent construction of the Death Star. That’s my hubby I’m talking about. Actually, he prefers to go by Obi Wan, but that’s a story for another time.
Last weekend, on our way back from a few days up north, we stopped at my in-laws’ place and somehow, during our short visit, some of my husband’s old toys were unearthed in the basement. During those discoveries, the kids often pose questions like what the heck is that, Dad? or is that all it does? or my personal favourite, meh.
I am officially old now that my response to those comments is “Oh, you kids don’t have any idea how cool this stuff is! Back when I was a kid…” {ahem} Read more...

These are the designs you’re looking for

Anthony Herrera Designs knows you don’t have to live on Hoth to have some snowy Star Wars fun. With some plain paper, an x-acto knife and these design templates, you can make yourself a veritable republic of snowflakes (or empire, if you’re more of a Dark Side kinda guy/gal). We think we’ll start with a storm trooper. Just remember, an x-acto knife, only by a grownup, should be used.
