Sparkler Writing, Star Murals and S’mores: Our Guide to the Best Earth Hour Ever

Darkness doesn’t have to mean boredom

Over 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries across the world are turning off their lights for an hour at 8:30 PM this Saturday. The symbolic gesture will introduce kids to an hour free of lights, screens or electronics. It might even be a first for some. How are you going to make sure that hour doesn’t suck? Don’t sit in silence staring into an abyss of blackness, for one thing. Max. fun doesn’t require max. power use. Plug into your people-powered source of entertainment and get ready for an awesome hour.

Power on!

1. If lighting off fireworks isn’t an option where you are, sparklers make an interactive, safer alternative.  Sparkler writing photography makes for awesome family photos. (We want to see ‘em, too! Send us a link!)

Cozy Up to a Backyard Campfire

How to host a summer campfire in your backyard

Last week we gave you all the tools for hosting an outdoor movie night in your backyard. This week at Camp Bunchland, it’s all about gathering the family in the backyard and toasting your toes (and some s’mores) by a campfire. Imagine coming home from work, loosening your tie and then sitting around a crackling fire in your own backyards.

Fire it up

First things first, check into backyard campfire laws in your city. Chances are to keep things nice and legal (not to mention safe) you’ll need to purchase a fire pit. Here are some we like:

Ball of fire outdoor fireplace, $299.99. Stainless steel fire pit, $730.84. Fire dish, $2,279. Portable fire pit, $131.71.
