News Round-Up Feb. 27: Frugal Living Benefits Kids, Banned Books Help Kids Read and the Power of Siblings

What we’re reading today:

1. Teaching kids to live frugally has many benefits, like learning to be more creative with their play and the value of delayed gratification.

2. In what comes as no surprise whatsoever, kids who aren’t super-keen on reading are more likely to be interested in banned books than non-controversial ones.

3. After a recent measles outbreak, the pro-vaccine activists remind the anti-vaccine parents that it’s about keeping all the kids safe, not just their own.

4. Moms don’t really talk to their daughters about math. Let’s change this! Addition at the grocery store, fractions while cooking/baking, geometry everywhere, etc.

5. The hidden power of siblings! TED presenter Jeffrey Kluger talks birth order and life-long bonds. Is there anything better for parents than seeing their kids work together and help each other out?

News Round-Up Feb. 3: Marriage Equality for Washington, Kindergarten Engagement and Things Kids Stick Up Their Noses

What we’re reading today:

1. Toronto Star columnist Catherine Porter’s kid stuck a Lego up his nose. Twice. And so they made a trip to the hospital while Porter asks the experts about all the other things that kids put up their noses and in their ears.

2. Kids of queer parents in Washington State and finally start bugging their moms or dads to get married. Well, almost. The state Senate passed a Bill that has to be approved by the House. Good work, Washington!

3. When siblings attack! No, really, when should you intervene when two of your kids just can’t seem to get along?

4. Earlier this week we heard that engaged kindergartners made for more successful kids/adults, so how to you increase that engagement?

5. And speaking of identifying early success, may we present to you the future table tennis gold medalist of the 2028 Olympics:

News Round-Up September 12: SpongeBob Is Bad For You, Siblings Are Good For You and A Daughter’s Letter To Her Dad

What we’re reading today:

 

1. SpongeBob SquarePants! He lives in a pineapple under the sea! SpongeBob SquarePants! He could be giving you ADHD! OK, not quite, but one study seems to think that watching SpongeBob has an effect on kids’ attention spans and ability to stay on task. (The study pitted SpongeBob against Caillou and colouring)

2. Can you run with your kids? How far should they go?

3. Need a good cry this morning? Look no further.

4. “From the time we gain a brother or sister, they can be both our fiercest competitors and closest confidantes.” Siblings are uber-important; they’re some of the most important relationships of a person’s life. So take a minute or two to observe your kids playing together and enjoy.

News Round-Up June 27: Birthday Party Politics, Gender-Free Preschool and 25 Years of American Girls

What we’re reading today:

1. The bad moms talk birthday party politics: why don’t some kids show up and why didn’t my kid get an invite, etc.

2. Move over Storm; this Swedish preschool wants to eliminate the use of gendered pronouns. Also, we don’t say “boys and girls,” we say “friends.”

3. How do you make your kids be friends with one another?

4. American Girl dolls have been around for 25 years now. Did you have one? Does your daughter? Is it Molly?
