I have a lot of respect for artists who are good at using music to teach things to kids. Too often, kids’ educational songs are nit-witty and didactic. But a few artists have mastered it. Hap Palmer and Ella Jenkins are two who have built long careers in this area. Schoolhouse Rock taught a whole generation about how Congress works. But who’s blazing trails in educational music today? One new artist has figured out a smart and simple way to use catchy music and lyrics to teach basic reading skills. Michael Rachap, a former advertising exec who left a lucrative career to study at the Berkelee College of Music, created a series of music-educational videos called Readeez. Essentially Readeez teaches even very young children how to read by showing words in large type, synched to the spoken word (or in this case, the sung word). Rachap has trademarked it “Syllabasynch,” but I think kids will just find these videos fun. Your 4-year-old may even end up knowing what a pronoun is:
