Carly Stasko investigates the quandaries of new parents… and raps on playgrounds
I first came up with this “Mom Rap” during a 4am sleep-deprived freestyle session I performed for my husband and newborn son when none of us were getting any sleep. I have since performed it for friends, family and strangers every chance I get. It breaks the ice and tells a story. I think that parenting is equal parts comedy and confidence.
We can’t take ourselves too seriously, but at the same time it’s important to recognize how brave and bad-ass parenting can be.
Here it is, the Mom Rap:

What we’re reading today:
1. Conservative columnist Benjamin Shapiro says that TV is full of shows that promote left-wing agendas. In his new book, Primetime Propaganda, he calls out Sesame Street for promoting pacifism because the characters talk about resolving conflicts peacefully. The nerve of that Elmo.
2. If you’re crying in front of your kids, are you teaching them empathy, or burdening them with taking care of you? Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams is having a whopper of a year and has found her self bursting into tears more than usual.
3. How open are you with your kids about sex? Brad Pitt says there are no secrets in his house, when he and Angelina Jolie need some alone time, they tell the kids they’re going off to kiss.
4. If your kid’s born in November or December, would you hold them back a year before starting school? Have you?
Meet Watoto from the Nile, your new favourite rap group
We don’t even know where to begin extolling the merits of Watoto from the Nile. Sisters, the oldest being 10, making a rap video? Someone making a song to call out Lil Wayne for all his bitches and hoes and misogynistic BS? Young girls making a rap video telling Lil Wayne they “hate when he be doing that”? Amazing.
Watoto from the Nile is three sisters: 10-year-old Nia, 9-year-old Nya and 5-year-old Kamaria. They took Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” (Sample lyrics: Yeah now she hearing with them other bitches, Yeah, I told her mind her fucking business) and wrote their own song over top of his beat, calling it “Letter to Lil Wayne”
