News Round-Up March 6: Lesbian Moms Get Full Parental Rights, Why Your Kid Might Wet the Bed and Blossom Writes a Parenting Book

What we’re reading today:

1. Tiny queer parent rights victory! An Israeli court has recognized a lesbian couple as their son’s natural, biological moms. One donated eggs while the other carried the pregnancy.  The mom who gave birth to the boy, now 5, was immediately recognized as the birth mother, but the other had to argue that if she were a man, of course genetic material would make her a legal parent.

2. Does your potty-trained child wet the bed? The problem might not be with their bladder, but rather their colon. (Warning: this is an article all about poop)

3. Baby-swinging yogi Lena Fokina says she does what she does to build the babies muscle development. Um, not convinced.

4. Blossom wrote a book! And no, it’s not about how to wear create a personal style via hats, it’s about attachment parenting. You  may have heard that Mayim Bialik has a PhD in neuroscience, and in her studies found much support for attachment parenting practices like co-sleeping and babywearing.

Tales from the Hammer

Poopgate

Robyn Knickle shares stories from Hamilton, Ontario

When my son Rudie was 16 months old, he started to hide under the table in the dining room to do his business.  I had read that this meant he was getting ready for toilet training so we brought a potty into the house, just to get him used to having it around.  When he was 18 months old, I got a call from my ecstatic husband, telling me that Rudie had just had his first poop on the potty.  We were so excited that he left it in there for me to see with my own two eyes when I got home.  Our son was a genius!  So advanced!!

Sick Happens, the Library and the Gender-Neutral Potty Training Book That Worked a Little Too Well

Meri Perra blogs about the challenges she and her partner face in trying to raise their girls with feminist values

Every parent whose kid is in public day care learns two things quickly:

  • Snot comes in a multitude of colours, more than you ever knew
  • You will need to have extra child care arrangements in place for when your kid gets sick. Because you haven’t known sick until you’ve had a kid in public day care.

I’ll say it again. Sick happens, enough to test the limits of the most generous sick-time benefits of a tired parent. One more time. Sick happens. Deal with it.
