This week, I had the instructive experience of going without a car for three days. Part of our family was driving up the I-5 from California to Oregon. I flew home early and managed to get around via public transit, bicycle and foot. Portland’s a pretty green, bike-friendly city, and it reminded me that I could live with a much smaller carbon footprint. (Except for the plane trip) I did pretty well, for three days anyway.

Also this week in Portland, a new electric car charging zone opened downtown. In a one block area there are now seven charging machines, each made by a different manufacturer, available for free public use.

A flash mob jived to Eddy Grant’s 1982 hit, “Electric Avenue” at the grand opening. This song was a dance hall hit in its day:
