There’s a general theory of parenting positing that kids must have a dog in order to learn responsibility. I’m convinced that the real allure of dog ownership is to have a tail-wagging being in the house who provides constant companionship and never says “I hate you!” Also, you can boss dogs around with no worry of backtalk. Are these really lessons for the kids, or for us?

News Round-Up June 14: Lion Vs. Baby, the Benefits of Pets and Prenatal Vitamins Could Reduce Risk of Autism

What we’re reading today:

1. Pets are good for kids. A recent study shows that living with a cat or a dog in the first year of life can reduce the risk of developing allergies.

2. This dad waved at his son’s school bus everyday of the school year, and each day was in a different costume.

3. Speaking of the school year, why do the kids get the whole summer off while we grownups have to work through June, July and August?

4. While we still don’t know what causes Autism, one study shows that mothers who took prenatal vitamins reduced the risk of their kids developing autism by up to 40 percent.

February 25 News Round-Up: Breast Milk Ice Cream, Picking Dogs Over Kids and a Revamped Easy-Bake Oven

What we’re reading today:

One London restaurant is offering pure, organic and totally natural ice cream. And it’s made from breast milk. Says the restaurant’s founder, “If it’s good enough for our children, it’s good enough for the rest of us.” (BBC Via Newser)

With a new ban on incandescent light bulbs kicking in next year in the U.S., the Internet got all in a panic that this meant the end of the Easy Bake Oven. (Recently named one of TIME‘s most influential toys) Never fear! The Easy-Bake Over will be re-released as the Easy-Bake Ultimate Oven, with the light bulb replaced by something a little more eco-friendly. Francis Lamb at Salon says that’s not the point. He says the oven will lose a little of its magic and will become “just a box that does …something.”
