Advice from Gavin McInnes

10 Tips from Gavin McInnes on How to Throw a Kid’s Party

Gavin McInnes wants your kid’s birthday party to be awesome

I hate kids parties. It’s a bunch of beta male dads in orange socks talking about politics and the whole thing makes me so uncomfortable, I usually just beg my way out of going in the first place.

That being said, my wife throws about the best kids parties in the world. Our kids are 3 and 5 and I can’t wait until they turn 4 and 6. I obviously enjoy our parties more because it’s my peeps on my turf but I honestly think there is some magic in the parties my wife throws that other kids parties don’t have.

Here are 10 things she does that make her parties way more than bearable:

How-To Throw an Oscar Party With Your Kids

Watch the 83rd Annual Academy Awards with your kids

You’ve watched all nominated films (or two of them), you’re curious to see what James Franco and Anne Hathaway have planned and you’ve made bets with your pals as to whether or not Natalie Portman will break out her bizarre laugh. The show itself doesn’t officially start until 8:00 p.m., and we can barely stay awake for the Best Picture announcement, never-mind the kids staying up that late, so why not kick things off early with a pre-pre-game and get everyone involved in cheering on their favourite movies and starlets. (Official pre-game here meaning armchair fashion criticism)

Here’s how to get everyone involved in Hollywood’s biggest night:

1. Red Carpet Dress-up

  • Assemble a bunch of dress-up clothes: Old Halloween costumes, sunglasses, random sequined items, clutch purses, oodles of costume jewelry, sashes, ties and vests or jackets

Make a Memory Mural

A collaborative art project sharing memories and resolutions makes for a great party activity

Kids and parents can all take part sharing their favourite memories of the last year as well as their hopes for 2011.

Establish an art corner for this particular party activity. (We can’t even tell you how many times we’ve accidentally dipped a chip and realized we just ate paste rather than some sort of sour cream-based concoction. Kidding! But wouldn’t that be awful? Don’t let it happen at your party.)

  • Spread out a sheet of mural paper (postal paper will do) on a table
  • We’re also way into the idea of using dozens of mini canvases (You can find 1″x1″ or 2″x2″ at your favourite craft supply store)
  • While we would never dream of stifling anyone’s creativity, we suggest coming up with a palette and offering your guests four colours that compliment the mood of the party. (playful primaries? sophisticated charcoal and eggplant? gold and silver uberglamour?)
