2008′s Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, passed by congress in the wake of panics about the lead content in children’s products, is having some troubling consequences. Despite the fact that there are no documented cases of children becoming ill after reading books printed before 1985, the chance that their illustrations might have been printed with lead-based inks means that they are now illegal to distribute.
