Catching Up With a New Mom of Twins

Rose Bianchini just had twins

It’s been a little while since we’ve had some great DIY ideas from Rose Bianchini, but we can hardly blame her — woman just had twins! In late December, Rose and Jason said hello to Emmett and Simon and no, we’re not sure which is which. We decided to give her a call and see how she’s adjusting to this whole motherhood thing.

Bunch: Are you getting any sleep?

Rose: When we get some help I do. Newborns don’t have any sort of schedule and they just want to eat all the time.

Do they act in synch, or is it too early?

They’re pretty in synch, even when they’re in different rooms. They sleep at the same time. They get the hiccups and sneeze at the same time. One time they both sneezed three times in a row, that was pretty cute.

News Round-Up Dec. 23: Miracle Tsunami Survivor, Bad Presents and Shifting Childhood Memories

What we’re reading today:

1. What to do if your in-laws try to change your time-honoured holiday traditions.

2. Ever had a bad gift? While we feel we’ve been pretty lucky on that front, we do know some people who just can’t give presents right. Well know you can air your gift-grievances on http://whydidyoubuymethat.com. Of course you can.

3. As much as we strive to make happy memories for our kids, research shows those memories don’t really finalize until about age 10. (So what your 5-year-old remembers about her first couple Christmases might be gone in a couple years)

4. Here’s a Festivus Miracle for you: A girl thought lost to the Indonesia tsunami seven years ago has been found.

5. Planning to stick a real baby in your Nativity play? Here’s how to properly stick on in swaddling clothes:

News Round-Up Dec. 6: Jane & Finch Kids Play Squash, Ads That Mock Santa and New Umbilical Cord Research

What we’re reading today:

1. A Swedish study found that newborn babies whose umbilical cords were cut three minutes after they were born instead of right away were less likely to be iron deficient.

2. Some Toronto kids in the Jane-and-Finch-area are trying out squash (the sport) after-school. Awesome. When one of those kids comes to dominate the international squash scene in 10 years or so, we expect a fabulous made-for-CBC movie.

3. KJ Dellantonia at the NYT Motherlode is not down with the new Best Buy ads that mock Santa Claus. We know!! Yeah, we get that some seasonal ads are meant to tug on your heartstrings and some are less subtle in making you buy stuff, but the Best Buy ones are gross. We think we need to write more on this later, but for now, we’re happy that KJ is sticking up for the man in the red suit.

Sweet, Sweet Slumber

Rose Bianchini is pregnant with twins

As my delivery date rapidly approaches we realize that it is time for the final sprint to prepare for our two bundles of joy. I am trying to read up on the basics of how to feed, diaper, wash and care for a tiny baby. Figure out where to buy diapers cheap, order some books about twins and of course there is the dilemma of where they should sleep so we have constant access for around-the-clock feedings and diaper changes. Think newborn x 2!

Of course with twins everything is just a little more complicated. If they sleep in bed with us there would be a serious lack of room, and hubby would be on the couch for about a year. That doesn’t seem like the best solution. We talked a lot and thought a lot about various options. We bought a wooden bassinet off Craigslist, because it seemed more solid than plastic and considered getting another or placing them both in it.
