The 5 Creepiest Kids’ Movies Ever Made

These movies are great if you like having nightmares

When I was growing up, VHS was the only way to bring 110 minutes of peace to the house, and our collection was small. So the few tapes we owned were played over and over again. And you couldn’t exactly preview the tape before you bought it. Gems like My Little Pony and the Aladdin series were a cherished part of my collection. But that can’t be said of all the movies I watched as a kid. Some of the tapes in our small collection were outright creepy!

Having recently acquired a digital copy of The Brave Little Toaster, but not yet mustered up the courage to watch it again, I’ve been inspired to share the top five disturbing movies of my childhood.

March Break Guide: Movie List

  • We’re not surprised that Clement Virgo, who’s directed episodes of the super-gritty crime series The Wire, among other things, would recommend a French New Wave film about a troubled child as family viewing. But we’re happy we got a more challenging list from him. If you don’t feel your 4-year-old is ready for The 400 Blows, you should definitely watch it yourself, and check out his other picks with your brood. After all, a day spent curled up on the couch sobbing over E.T. sounds pretty delicious to us.

Fantastic!

We at Bunch were squealing with glee about the release of Fantastic Mr. Fox! We haven’t been this excited about a new movie since…well, October when Where the Wild Things Are came out. What’s with all the hip directors turning their sights to children’s films nowadays? We can’t figure it out, but the combination of Wes Anderson and Roald Dahl has us excited beyond words.

Before you head to the theatre to see this dazzling film, round up some neighbours and friends for a pre-show party! Activity Village has instructions and a template for crafting homemade fox masks, and with some modifications kids can go as other characters from the film! They will have so much fun channeling their inner animal. Set the tone with a playlist of ‘60s pop and folk from the Beach Boys and Burl Ives.

Everyone we know is excited about the “Where the Wild Things Are” movie, opening in theatres on
Friday, October 16th. (If you grew up with Maurice Sendak’s amazing book and if you read it to your kids, you know why). People of all ages have been reconnecting with the book and getting inspired to make some wildly amazing stuff.

On the afternoon of Oct.4th, 2009, at Bunch’s invitation, 700 parents and their wild children
packed the Toronto night club Revival Lounge and had a Wild Rumpus party.

We are sending a challenge out to the world to create your own wild rumpuses.  In your basement, in your backyard, or in a night club with 500 other roaring kids channeling their inner Max, we challenge you to be unique and to get inspired to create an experience everyone can enjoy.
