Jane Lynch Helping the Republicans, Music Classes for 6-Month-Olds and Multi-Tasking Moms

What the cool parents are reading today:

1. Remember that mom who was sent to jail for putting down her father’s address instead of her own so that she could get her daughters into a better school? Kelley Williams-Bolar is half-way through her sentence and giving a lot of speeches.

2. Does your baby need music classes? New research suggests that “music training can foster babies’ emotional development and communication skills,” so you’d better enroll that 6-month-old in classes. What, you think it’s enough that they’ve learned to hold their head up at that age?

3. If you’re a mom, do you feel like you’re got about seven things on the go at all time? Moms are all about the multi-tasking.

4. Did you know that in Denmark, your baby name has to be approved by the government? Here are some other baby name rules from around the world. You can bet there aren’t a lot of Tyrannosaurus Rexes across the Atlantic.

Our Guide to Mother’s Day: Homemade Cards, Mother’s Day Raps and Sharing What Makes Moms So Special

The Bunch Guide to Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day! It’s a day to celebrate the women who raised you, and if you’re currently in the process of raising kids, it’s a day to accept some homemade cards and extra kisses. If you don’t have brunch reservation, you’d  better hope that breakfast in bed is pretty tasty and not at all full of bits of eggshell.

1. Cards

Did your kids make you and/or your partner a card at school? How about one for Grandma? If your kid has multiple mother figures to make cards for, here’s hoping that your card is the nicest card and you don’t have to go cry in the bathroom like Precious Chong did. Need a DIY card idea? The bottom of a bunch of celery makes a great rose shape that you turn into a stamp. Want something a little edgier? Here’s a tattoo card.

Mama’s Boys Are Back in Style

This article originally published in The Grid

mom and her boys

When golfer Bubba Watson burst into tears and hugged his mom after winning his first Masters tournament, he inspired a slew of editorials about when and whether it was okay for men to cry. What year is this? Stereotypically, mama’s boys have a bad rap, likened to maladjusted Norman Bates types or weaklings. We have a problem with this. And so does Kate Stone Lombardi, whose new book, The Mama’s Boy Myth, documents how boys with close relationships to their mothers have a higher emotional intelligence and better mental health than those who don’t.

So set aside an hour or so for mother-son QT. Some suggestions: Take your boy to a side-by-side art class, have a good chat over hot chocolate at a family friendly café, or go on a hike. Teach them that real men cry, do housework, and share how they’re feeling, and they’ll never be too old to seek comfort from their moms. Oh, and the new generation of mama’s boys has nothing to do with that new TLC show, Mama’s Boys of the Bronx. Those are just man-children who don’t want to do their own cooking and laundry.

News Round-Up Nov. 18: Mom Coaches, Occupying L.A. With Kids and Our Declining Birthrate

What we’re reading today:

1. Why don’t more moms coach? An excellent question! Aren’t many of the young moms these days the former high school soccer stars? Come on moms!

2. Moms trust other moms on what products to buy.

3. An L.A. mom brings her kids to the Occupy protests because, “The children have been aware of our bankruptcy and unemployment problems, and I hoped that seeing other people who have been similarly affected would give them a sense of being part of a larger whole.”

4. People just aren’t having babies these days.

5. Tennis legends as kids is pretty cute, but it feels weird to only show the boy legends. (Yes, we see that it’s for the Stockholm Open which is a men’s tournament, but still. It hasn’t been the best year for woman-friendly tennis ads, and we were under the impression that with a bounty of kickass women tennis stars, it was a pretty gender-equal sport.)
