News Round-Up March 15: New Breast-Feeding Recommendations, Meatless Mondays and Serious Career Women

What we’re reading today:

1. The circumcision debate rages on! Bad news for intactivists, circumcision now linked to lower rates of prostate cancer.

2. Some Scottish researchers are looking to revise recommendations that new mothers should breastfeed exclusively for the first six months. They suggest that instead the goal should be not so much in the numbers, but the results — what works best for your family. “Six months exclusive breast-feeding,” they write, “is considered unrealistic and unachievable by many families and promoting this is perceived as setting parents up to fail.”

3. In support of Meatless Mondays, or adding a vegetarian meal or two a week for your family.

4. According to one author, serious career women don’t work part-time, even if they’re moms.

News Round-Up Feb. 14: Banning Gender-Crossing Clothes in Virginia, Lovenomics and Graduated Milk

What we’re reading today:

1. A school district in Virgina wants to ban cross-dressing among its students. The Suffolk school district wants kids to only wear clothes that reflect their gender. Um, does that even entail? No pink polo shirts for boys? Nothing with a sports team for girls? Apparently the school district thinks this will help kids that could be a target for bullies.

2. Have you seen this ad for graduated milk? Did you know graduated milk was a thing? The ad says it’s for that toddler stage when between breast milk and regular milk. What? Yeah, sounds like a made-up fear. Thanks, Natrel.

3. Do all anti-vaccination people have an air of superiority about them?

4. Some studies say that couples are less happy in their relationship after the first baby arrives, but this couple says kids are key in lovenomics.

Writing Muppet Music and Weighing In On the Pizza-Is-A-Vegetable Thing

What’s new in Muppet news

You know that opening song from the Muppets, “Life’s a Happy Song”? Did you know it was written by Flight of the Concords Bret McKenzie? Makes a certain amount of sense and now that we go back and watch the opening scene again, we can see Concords all over it. McKenzie also wrote two other songs, “Me Party” and “Man or Muppet?” and says one of the hardest parts, aside from not breaking down any Muppet rules, is writing for Miss Piggy. “If Miss Piggy goes too high,” McKenzie tells the New York Times, “she sounds like a mouse. And if she goes too low, she sounds like a dude.”

National Post’s Tournament of Muppets

Who will be the last?

The Muppet experts at the National Post will be pitting muppet against muppet to find Canada’s best and most favourite felt creature.

“Over the next five days, our Muppet experts at the Post’s Arts & Life section will debate and vote on which Muppet deserves its place in the Jim Henson canon, and which simply needs to be shot out of a cannon, Gonzo-style.”

If you follow along with their picks, vote for your favourite on Nov. 22. Thankfully, all Muppets, regardless of how they place in the tournament, are expected to appear in the Muppets movie, which comes out the very next day. No need to choose between Pepe and the Swedish Chef.

What are your picks for Round 1? We’re pulling for Scooter, the Swedish Chef, Miss Piggy (obviously) and Gonzo.

Costume Recipe: Miss Piggy

Be the most glamorous of all muppets

What other beauty queen is known for her karate chops? Exactly.

Creating a Miss Piggy costume is actually super easy, since it’s just something sparkly and glamorous, with piggy flare. The key to a good Miss Piggy is attitude.

Miss Piggy’s defining features: Wavy blond hair, Hollywood starlet wardrobe and pig snout.

You’ll need:

  • red carpet-worthy dress (preferably pink)
  • feather boa
  • curly blond hair (yours or a wig)
  • plain hair band
  • 2 pink felt or cardboard triangles
  • crazy thick/dark eye lashes (have fun with mascara or get some fake ones — just don’t glue anyone’s eyes shut)
  • pearls
  • pig nose (optional — kids are really good at just turning their own noses into piggy snouts)
  • evening gloves
