News Round-Up Oct. 19: A Husband’s Biological Clock, the Obamas and the Kardashians and Autism-Friendly Resorts

What we’re reading today:

1. A husband and wife both want to be parents, just not at the same time.

2. There are at least two beach resorts in Florida that advertise themselves as “autism-friendly.” The staff have been trained to meet the needs of autistic guests. Innovative!

3. Have you heard about this Chicago school teacher who, after forgetting to bring a lunch one day, decided to eat in the cafeteria with the kids? She was disgusted and from then on chronicled the school lunches on an anonymous blog. Now she’s got a book, Fed Up With Lunch.

4. Barack Obama doesn’t want his girls watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but Michelle Obama says she doesn’t mind as long as Sasha and Malia take away the right message: that Kim’s wedding was krazy. My takeaway: Michelle Obama watches the Kardashians with her daughters. Yes!!!

News Round-Up May 26: Parenting That Differs By Region, Mark Zuckerberg Wants Your Kids and Michelle Obama Teams Up With Elmo

What we’re reading today:

1. In the NYT Motherlode blog, Lisa Belkin looks at parenting by zip code. Apparently L.A. moms only get birthday cakes from bakeries while Seattle moms whip up something from a mix.

2. Would you let your kids on Facebook? Mark Zuckerberg wants to let kids under 13 sign up for his social network.

3. The genderless baby thing isn’t going away any time soon. Do you think it’s impossible to raise a kid without assigning the baby a gender?

4. If you have out of town guests, do you have favourite, non-touristy places you like to take them? KidFriendlyDC has some tips for those visiting Washington. Where would you go in your city that isn’t say, the CN Tower?

5. Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, Elmo and Rosita have an important message for you. But here’s what goes into making that message:

News Round-Up May 4: Alexander the Movie, Quitting on Mother’s Day and Dancing With Michelle Obama

What we’re reading today:

1. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is coming soon to a theatre near you! Maybe! Kids Are All Right director Lisa Cholodenko is in talks to direct a live action adaptation of the classic storybook. Via Jezebel

2. After the death of their son, two grandparents meet the granddaughter they never knew existed. Alan S. Kaufman shares this story on Salon.

3. Author Mel Robbins thinks moms should just quit. Don’t just take Mother’s Day off, just stop doing the all the domestic chores altogether. (We’re guessing Robbins doesn’t count those mothers whose families all fairly contribute to the household duties.)

4. A new study says that families who sit down to eat dinner together stay slimmer than their eat apart counterparts. Why? Maybe kids are more likely to make healthy choices when they’re around Mom and Dad.

U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama told the Today Show that the first kids don’t have Facebook. She doesn’t see why young kids need it.

You oughta know that Alanis Morissette has posted a baby picture of young Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway. And he’s cute.

Do toy guns = bad parenting? Rick Marin on Salon says that giving his kids Nerf guns “hits the fantasy of bringing justice to an unjust world.

And while Rick Marin’s kids are fighting imaginary outlaws, the Hipster Mom‘s kid is becoming one. Have you ever had to teach your kids about why we don’t shoplift?

We Love: Thursday, January 6

What we’re reading on the blogs today:

As you might have noticed, we’re big vegetable fans here. So much so, we get rather peeved when someone tries to hide them away. That’s why we were delighted to see George Ball of the Wall Street Journal declare 2011 to be the Year of the Vegetable! Ball takes his cue from Michelle Obama and her Let’s Move! initiative. In order to fight childhood obesity, Ball says we need to teach by example — adults also need to eat more vegetables and the tomato slice on a burger doesn’t count. Interestingly (but not surprisingly) he says that kids get pretty excited about the vegetables they grown themselves. His answer: more community gardens! Now where is Margaret Atwood?
