“Laughter Remembered” by Louise Almon
Louise Almon is a South African artist and anti-apartheid activist whose work emphasizes the importance of love and happiness through hardship. In “Laughter Remembered”, a child swings happily from the arms of a woman amid a background of green grass and blue sky. Almon captures the child’s feeling of security and joy and the woman’s feeling of comfort and confidence. In this piece, all the two figures see is each other.
This piece is one of 25 works by female artists and poets created for Art For Humanity’s “Women for Children” portfolio. The project aims to inspire moral ownership of the rights of the child in South Africa and internationally, and to promote creativity and visibility about the topic. The art made for this project was exhibited internationally, and displayed as billboards and bus ranks in South Africa and distributed as posters to clinics, schools and libraries.
