Beth Blenz-Clucas blogs about music for kids that grownups will love too
Mother’s Day always brings me back to the time just before I became a mother, those precious few last weeks when everything was still a mystery and I was both elated and anxious. For some reason, I was fixated on what the baby’s eyes would look like. Never mind that we hadn’t yet figured out the gender or name for this baby, what I kept dreaming about was what it would be like to have those brand new little orbs wonder back at me.
One of the songs on my playlist during that time was Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” I’m sure he wrote the song for a lover, but it really spoke for my feelings about motherhood at the time, waiting and wondering and watching for the day when I’d get to meet our first child. “In Your Eyes” returned to regular rotation before our second son was born, and it remains one of the best lyrical and musical expressions of what we seek and find in a loved one’s eyes.
