Much has been made of the ability of young kids to cross freely back and forth across the lines of reality and fantasy. It’s not that children are confused. They apparently do know the difference and are always “actively constructing” the boundary lines. My sister-in-law, for example, used to see cowboys with guns, hiding behind logs on her bedroom wall every night. It was like her own personal movie, in Technicolor, yet it all was as real to her as the bedroom door that she made her parents keep open.
