Dad of Gay 7-Year-Old Tells Readers to Get Over It

Spoiler: After kid came out to his parents as gay, they still love him just the same

kid holds gay pride flag at parade

A Huffington Post blogger named Amelia recently wrote a post about her 7-year-old son coming out to her and her husband. Not surprisingly, it’s received a zillion comments and not all of them nice and supportive. One reaction Amelia read a few times was, “But how does his father feel about this?”

Well, Amelia’s husband Dave has responded. Guess what, he loves his son. And not any less than if the kid were straight. And he’s not sad. He doesn’t bemoan the lack of hetero-normative activities his son will miss out on, because his son is 7 and who knows what sort of stuff he’ll be into? For now he loves sports. If one day he doesn’t, that’s fine by them. Is Dave sad that his son will never get married? Of course not, because if his son one day wants to get married, he can!!

Female Writers and Editors Weigh In On the “Chore Wars”

Our most recent edition of the Bunch Poll in the National Post

A recent Time Magazine cover story, titled “The Chore Wars,” examines the amount of labour, both paid and unpaid, that men and women put into the household. Current research says that in families with young kids, where a mom and a dad both go to work, women are working just 20 more minutes each week. While it’s true that women spend more time on childcare, men make up for the difference by logging more hours at work. And yet, working moms report that they feel as though they’re doing more than their fair share.

We felt compelled to ask asked some hard working women whether or not this statistic – that working moms and dads put in basically the same amount of labour – rang true for them.

Lightweight and quick-moving, the name means “Dawn Runner.” Excellent news if you have any budding paleontologists in your brood. Via Huffington Post.

RACIST CUPCAKES?! Yeah, we never thought we’d see those words together either until we saw it on The Stir. Duncan Hines has gone and made this “Hip Hop Cupcakes” ad to promote its new Amazing Glazes line. By adding a little flava to vanilla cupcakes, the cupcakes really seem to find their groove.. in blackface. We’re more uncomfortable with the cupcakes than when Roger Stirling dons similar makeup to serenade his stupid wife Jane.

Oh man do we need to see something positive now. Like art teacher Rama Hughes‘ collection of his students’ works on Flickr. Pretty awesome to think the California Landmarks series was all done by 9-year-olds. (Via Tiny Iron Fists)

Emily Rosenbaum at Babble asked some experts how to explain diversity to her son after was curious about a woman in a burka.

Tia, of Christopher and Tia, waxes nostalgic on a Christmas tradition between her and her grandmother, now passed on to her kids.

Dylan Kendall at the Huffington Post took part in a Play-Doh design challenge wherein kids recreated their favourite out of Play-Doh. While all the submissions in the photo gallery are impressive (We don’t recall going much beyond the spaghetti factory in terms of Play-Doh sculpture techniques), the purple shoes are a favourite.

Speaking of shoes – every purchased those light-up sneakers for your kid, envious that your own kicks didn’t give off a similar glow? No more! We saw these Electrolites on Thrillist and thought: awesome.
