News Round-Up March 16: Homeschooling Cautionary Tales, the Importance of Boys Making Friends and Lying, Cheating Toddlers

What we’re reading today:

1. Homeschooled and illiterate. Sure, some parents make great teachers and some home-schooled or unschooled kids take their educational freedom and really blossom into intelligent and caring adults, but some parents can’t homeschool and end up with 11-year-olds who can’t read or do more than basic math.

2. Friendships are really important for tweens and teens, as a close friend makes it easily to handle tough stuff and makes one less likely to be bullied.  Here are some friendship tips for boys.

3. Should we make classic fairy tales less scary for our kids? We’re not about to take our elementary school kids to see the Hunger Games, but kids are a lot stronger than we sometimes give them credit for.

News Round-Up Nov. 14: Sasha Grey, Anarchist Home-Schoolers and More Kids For Brad Pitt?

What we’re reading today:

 

1. So, the Sasha Grey (former adult movie star) reading to grade 1 kids thing: Would you have a problem with it? If she’s being presented as a celebrity to the kids, and therefore a role model of sorts, and if there’s any way a particularly literate kid would Google her, yeah, we see a bit of a problem.

2. What does it mean to choose to only have one kid?

3. And in completely opposite news, Brad Pitt says he and Angelina Jolie aren’t necessarily done growing their family.

4. We were glued to the screen reading this thing on a home-schooling experience in the 1970s.

5. Have a screaming baby on your hands? Throw on some Biggie.

News Round-Up September 2: Unschooling Your Kids, Beyonce Doing It Right and Other People’s Children at the Aquarium

What we’re reading today:

1. As more families turn to home-schooling, more kids are being unschooled. They’re the ones who set the curriculum.

2. Are you spontaneous mom, or commando mom? How to tell: at the aquarium’s preschool area, do you remind your kids not to touch anything, or are you taking a video on your iphone of your kid terrorizing the sea creatures?

3. Today in the Beyoncé pregnancé,* people can’t just be happy for her, it needs to be all political and stuff since there are so many single black mothers and Bey is “doing it the right way.” *h/t the Hairpin

5. I Don’t Know How She Does It is now a movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker. Do you know this book? Do you love it? Will you see the movie?
