I’ll Take You There: Knowing Where to Find the Good Kids Music

Beth Blenz-Clucas blogs about music for kids that grownups will love too

The diversity of kids’ music these days is astounding. While most news trend stories about children’s music focus on the indie rockers who’ve lately turned their attention to writing songs for kids, there’s a whole world of excellent family-friendly music available now, in just about any genre.

It’s only natural that musicians start thinking about children’s music once they become parents. I hear from them all the time. The call typically goes like this: “Well, I had a kid, and I couldn’t find anything good for them to listen to, so I started writing songs.” My usual response is to wince a little, realizing that children’s music still has a long, long way to go to build national awareness (mostly due to the almost total lack of coverage in mainstream media). Needless to say, there’s an abundance of fantastic, smart music for kids available, if parents know where to look.
