Meri Perra blogs about the challenges she and her partner face in trying to raise their girls with feminist values
Something was up this week, and it wasn’t nice. At the news aggregate where I’m interning, I posted too many tragic articles involving very young children. So I browsed, searching for good news and needing distraction. And you know, us queer families and the things we like are all over the web. Of course we are, it’s 2011! Here are some things I found that, as a dyke mom, were just awesome. I’m sharing:
1. Two wonderful books about boys, culture, religion and long hair:
God Loves Hair by Vivek Shraya — Toronto musician, film maker and first-time children’s author Vivek Shraya’s book is a collection of 20 short stories about a gender queer south Asian boy and how he navigates the world. The art work, by Toronto artist Juliana Neufeld, is heart-warming and breath taking. The book made the American Library Association’s rainbow list, their picks for queer-friendly and themed books for children and youth. Hey, how come we don’t have that?
