What we’re reading today:

1. Are lesbian moms doing a better job of parenting their kids than straight families? Here’s what they’re doing right.
2. Speaking of lesbian moms raising kids that are all right, HBO is turning the Oscar-nominated movie into a TV series. It’ll be written by Lisa Cholodenko, but we doubt we’d be so lucky as to get Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. But will the TV show get right what the movie got wrong, namely, the “lesbian movie involving hot man-woman sex and yucky lesbian sex” part?
3. And those lesbian moms who moved to the suburbs 30 years ago? Pioneers.
4. Now that pioneer parents cleared the way, adoptions by gay and lesbian parents are up, way up.

What we’re reading today:

1. A husband and wife both want to be parents, just not at the same time.
2. There are at least two beach resorts in Florida that advertise themselves as “autism-friendly.” The staff have been trained to meet the needs of autistic guests. Innovative!
3. Have you heard about this Chicago school teacher who, after forgetting to bring a lunch one day, decided to eat in the cafeteria with the kids? She was disgusted and from then on chronicled the school lunches on an anonymous blog. Now she’s got a book, Fed Up With Lunch.
4. Barack Obama doesn’t want his girls watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but Michelle Obama says she doesn’t mind as long as Sasha and Malia take away the right message: that Kim’s wedding was krazy. My takeaway: Michelle Obama watches the Kardashians with her daughters. Yes!!! Read more...

Cynthia Kinnunen, her husband and their three kids are on the road en route to Disney World.

We’ve sent Old School Still Cool blogger Cynthia Kinnunen off on a roadtrip to Disney World in a Chevrolet Orlando. How will she and the family fare on that 23-hour or so drive down? She’ll be reporting back from the road and is sure to have picked up a few survival tips.
One of the toughest parts of taking a family roadtrip can be simply getting out the door. Between choosing the appropriate attire (after reviewing the weather forecast a million times), packing said attire into efficient, space-saving baggage (impossible!), plotting child entertainment and snacking strategies and ensuring no “can’t live without” cuddlies are left behind, this is no easy task! 1. A subdivision in Edgewater, Florida wants to ban kids from playing outside. We were hoping this was just an April Fools’ Joke like the re-branding of Funny-Or-Die to Friday-Or-Die, but since the article was posted last night, it seems to be true.

3. No need to throw out those Fruit Loops just yet, artificial dye has not been found to cause hyperactivity. — New York Times
4. Canadians say “sorry” a lot. For some of us, it’s just an involuntary reaction. And given the frequency with which we say it., maybe we’re devaluing the word. One Babble blogger in New Jersey is teaching her kids not to say they’re sorry, because she says, “kids say it largely to appease adults, and the word has very little in the way of meaning or impact.” Read more...
