When we lived in New York City, the unofficial kick-off to summer was Fleet Week (which usually coincided with Memorial Day). From May 25 to June 1, United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard military ships dock at the piers on the west side of Manhattan and the crews spend time exploring the city (making for a sea of military uniforms in every pocket of the city). While the ships are docked, the public is allowed to participate in guided tours of the vessels and other special events.
Last May, my son was old enough to appreciate Fleet Week. We could see all the docked ships from our apartment building rooftop, igniting an interest in ships, boats, and military women and men. So in honour of Fleet Week, I decided to make a vessel (and telescope), right here in our new home.
