The Most Fun May Day Traditions: Magic Morning Dew, Fairy Houses and Foliage Accessories

MAYDAY! Serious springtime fun ahead!

Although summer doesn’t officially begin ’til June, May Day is exactly half a year from November 1st, and marks the end of the winter in the Northern hemisphere. THAT calls for a celebration. Traditionally, kids in English villages would “bring in May” by dancing around maypoles, riding around on hobby horses, and nicky nine door-ing their neighbors with baskets full of treats.

Here are some cool ways you can bring in the spring with your kids.

FOLIAGE ACCESSORIES FOR STYLIN’ AND PROFILIN’

This ancient May Day custom has really survived the test of time. Kids would handcraft garland from flowers and foliage and drape themselves in it before they would go begging door to door, singing along their jaunt. Check out our dandelion crown how-to for a garland head dress you can make in a snap. Don’t limit your flower crown wearing to one day, either. We anticipate the dandelion crown will be in style all spring. Fab!

Fairy Houses: More Than Just a Sanity Saver

Krista Rao blogs about crafty adventures with her kids

I must admit that the first time I suggested that my kids build a fairy house (miniature structures built for fairies and their friends to visit), it was purely for selfish reasons — to keep them busy for just a few minutes while I located my sanity! What I didnʼt know was that in addition to keeping the kids occupied it encouraged such creativity, imagination, teamwork and excitement. Since that time, building fairy houses has been our go-to craft when we are camping.

On our most recent camping trip my two children and their two friends spent some time making a fabulous house for the Tooth Fairy and her friends to visit. We were trying to butter her up because a certain little camper will be losing a tooth soon. I took some pictures of the process to make a very simple tutorial.

5 Films About Mythical Creatures

A Bunchbrary of mythical creatures

Oh the leprechaun! The little guy running around causing mischief and hiding gold coins in a pot on the other side of the rainbow! Unless you went to Notre Dame or are really into sugary multicoloured marshmallow cereal, you probably only think about leprechauns on St. Patrick’s Day. But that’s OK. We’re sure all the other mythical creatures would kill for a holiday! So in addition to the drinking green beer, donning your “Kiss Me I’m Irish” t-shirt and causing general mischief, let’s take a moment to think about all those magical beings who don’t get to march in a parade or have buttons made in their likeness. Here’s our tribute to the wonderous, mythical beings who may or may not exist. (You never know!)
