Cookie mogul Eden Hertzog shares recipes she enjoys with her family

What a weekend. I took about 20 photos of various put-together meals, but none of them really seemed worthy of a post, to be honest. The truth is – we’re not really cooking these days, are we?
No, because all of a sudden it’s summer. It’s completely, utterly gorgeous outside and that means we don’t really turn on the stove.
Let’s take Saturday as an example. It was over 20 degrees and sunny, plus balmy and breezy, so we went down to the lake, which, in our neighbourhood of Parkdale/Roncesvalles is a little bit, how do you say, ghetto? Like a ghost town. Anyhow, Cedar doesn’t care. He was happy to sit on the boardwalk and look at his water bottle.

Or hang out near his Mama in her funny upside-down pirate ship shirt. Read more...

When Cedar starting eating solids, we were extremely careful about what he ate. This is probably true for most parents, but haven’t you noticed it’s especially true lately, amongst all us new age, yuppie, hippie, local food-eating, baby-wearing, co-sleeping, teaching-our-kids-to-sign parents?
We started with organic pear puree, then organic butternut squash puree, then organic oatmeal. He loved all of it, and then it became clear that Cedar pretty much wanted everything we were eating too. I think they call that “baby-led weaning” – or wait, isn’t that just “eating”?
In any case, I’m going to say it’s been a bit of a slow decline with food options. He’s become pickier. He used to really love veggies, probably because he didn’t know he was eating them. Now, I swear, if there is spinach in his eggs he will literally catch the tiniest shred of it and look at me, disgusted, before spitting it out. What is up with that?! Read more...

This blog, if you haven’t noticed, is called Cravings. The way I see it, there are two kinds of cooking: the food you make because you have to eat, and the food you make because you were inspired and had a craving for something. In a perfect world, yes, it would be great if everything we made were inspired and out of craving. But let’s be real – sometimes you just have to boil oats or fry an egg.
I had a craving for tacos. Now, I know how to make really good tacos with authentic fillings using soft corn tortillas, but what I was really craving last week were the ones we used to eat at my dad’s house on the weekends, the ones from the Old El Paso taco kit. These are what we considered junk food. Read more...

My sweet tooth is out of control these days. I wonder if I’m pulling a Season 5 Betty Draper thing (Mad Men reference) or if I just happen to love sweets. Either way, I got the idea in my head that I wanted to bake a cake because two of my best gals were coming over for a glass of wine in the evening.
I was determined to get this cake in the oven before Cedar went to bed, but it was proving to be a very difficult task. He is obsessed with the kitchen sink and whenever we’re in the kitchen all he wants to do is pull up this super tall stool to the sink and play with the water. By which I mean turn it on full blast and make a huge mess and give me six heart attacks because he’s so high up and I have to hold the back of his shirt while trying to make dinner. Read more...

For the very first time since the history of having Cedar as our very needy roommate (I mean, our very amazingly awesome kid), Bri and I went away. Just the two of us. To Niagara Falls. I can’t explain it exactly, but I really love it there. It is godforsakenly cheesy and supremely overtouristed, but maybe that’s what draws me there: it’s not trying to be something that it’s not.
Anyway, back to the romantic weekend… We went to an outlet mall, we ate a salted pretzel dipped in bright yellow mustard, we looked at Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and we catnapped AND slept-in.
Amidst the Falls, and the Merlot, and watching TV in a king-sized bed in our hotel, I’d say it was a good weekend. Man, it was good to have fun with my husband. I think part of what made it fun was that I offered to let him make all the decisions. I think he liked that. Read more...

Sorry I’ve been gone a couple of weeks; there was a three-day trip to Los Angeles (just me!) and then a sick Cedar and a sick Papa to contend with when I got home.
I’m pretty good with taking care of my sick toddler, but I must admit, I think I kinda suck at taking care of my husband. It wasn’t always this way; I do remember being more apt to making him soup or rubbing his feet or running him a bath, or at the very least – being nice to him. I have Cedar to blame for this. Not Cedar himself, but the whole Cedar-ness of our situation. We live with a really busy toddler who demands a lot from us. Neither one of us feels there’s much left to give after a day of running after or picking up or catering to the Little Guy. Read more...

Eden Hertzog is the entrepreneur behind New Moon Kitchen, the vegan organic bakery that deals stellar cookies all across North America. Her treats are free of preservatives, trans fats, and nuts and full of healthy stuff. Sure, she runs a vegan bakery and has a name like a wood nymph, but she means serious business when it comes to great family recipes.
Eden started her business fresh out of high school. She got a job at a Toronto café and took advantage of the free reign opportunity to bake treats for customers. The clientele began raving about her goodies, which were delicious and didn’t make you feel like you’ve scarfed a row of Oreos. Before long, Eden had established a personal following. Read more...
