Old School Still Cool

Jell-o: There’s Something Appealing About Jiggly Things

Cynthia Kinnunen blogs about sharing stuff from your childhood with your kids

Normally, seeing things on your plate wobbling to and fro doesn’t send your pulse racing, unless it’s in fear of having to consume said wobbly food product.  However, there’s one jiggly food-type thing that I used to adore as a child and my kids now go crazy for: put on your best Bill Cosby voice and give a hollah for JELL-O!

Now I know some parents give this the finger wag because, well, it’s made of nothing except food colouring and jiggly gelatin (and maybe a few other things but I’m not checking the ingredient list!). Really though, there’s something that’s just too much fun about a wiggly bowl of the colourful stuff when you’re a kid. My favourite colour/flavour is green/lime, by the way.

Peach Crumble: Easier Than Pie

Eden Hertzog is now a mom… and still hungry

One of my survival tactics for motherhood (yes, I said survival) is getting out of the house. I have never been one to stay at home doing anything except sleeping and cooking, so being at home with a baby came as a bit of a shock. I relentlessly tried to figure out what to do. The fact of the matter is, there really isn’t all that much to do. I know there’s housework, and playing, but for those of us who get jittery after an hour of that, there’s getting out! Going for coffee, going for walks, running an errand – anything to break up the day and speak full, coherent sentences with other adults.

Celebrate Shark Week With Shark Cupcakes

Live every week like it’s shark cupcake week

It’s that time of year again when Discovery Channel devotes a week of programming* to help us learn all about the men in grey suits.

Is watching shark-themed programming together a tradition in your family? Or perhaps you have a kid or two obsessed with predators and sea animals? There’s something about a great nature show that just captivates the whole family.

To really get into the spirit of Shark Week, we recommend shark-themed treats, like say cupcakes. It’s really only the decorations that make these cupcakes sharky, so feel free to use your favourite cupcake recipe. You could, however, use a red velvet cupcake recipe as the bright red colouring might give the impression that you’re biting into a living thing, like a shark does. Or, if you’re raising your kids with an appreciation for dark humour, you could do strawberry jam or cherry-filled cupcakes.
