Just What is a Sugar Plum? Decoding Traditional Christmas Fare

What are these supposed holiday foods and where did they come from?

From stockings hung by the chimney with care to yuletide carols being sung by a choir, the songs and stories we associate with Christmas all paint a picture of festive good times. And what holiday celebration is complete without some sort of feast? Some food traditions – like roast turkey – just make sense. Others, like eggnog, perhaps less so. We’ve tracked done some favourite holiday foods from Christmas tunes, tomes and TV specials, as well as some cultural gems  you’ve shared with us.

Eggnog

What is it? A drink traditionally made with milk, eggs, sugar, spices and often rum. Commercially sold eggnog contains no raw eggs. (As the dairy folks would have umpteen salmonella lawsuits on their hands, no doubt.)

Cultural reference: It just seems to appear in the grocery stores around the same time as other seasonal treats.
