Celebrate Star Wars Day with a Wookiee Cookie

May the Fourth be with you this Star Wars Day

wookie cookies and other galactic recipes from the star wars cook book

Star Wars is cool every day of the year, but May 4th is special. It’s Star Wars Day! The only other day besides Halloween and comic book/sci fi conventions when it’s totally OK to show up for work or school dressed as a Jedi or Imperial Storm Trooper (depending on what side of the Force you identify with). And so celebrate all things Star Wars, we must.

1. Star Wars Pancakes

If you didn’t start your day off with Star Wars pancakes, relax. They’re a perfectly normal dinner food, especially on Jedi religious holidays. Special Star Wars pancake molds are pretty easy to find, but if your midi-chlorian count is especially high, you could always try to make your own pancake AT-AT. We assume Jim of Jim’s Pancakes is a close pal of Yoda and Mace Windu.

News Round-Up Dec. 19: Record-Setting Births, Gendered Toys and More Awesome Lesbian Moms

What we’re reading today:

1. Some lesbian mom schooled her homophobic mayor about what a family is and what it takes to get through life: love.

2. Maybe we were too quick to judge the girl Lego, but did it have to be those Barbie shades of pink and purple? And haven’t boys and girls always mixed their gendered toys together? G.I. Jones riding My Little Ponies etc.?

3. Kids are watching pornography at age 11… because they’re curious about sex and not getting the answers they want in school.

4. A tiny Hamilton woman just gave birth to a giant baby, like 11 lbs 11 oz giant. Whole family looks good and healthy though!

5. Darth Vader conducts a flash mob choir. Can you imagine if he and Santa teamed up? A lump of coal in your stocking is a pretty weak threat compared to the Force choke.

H2 Oh, Yeah! Ways to Play with Water

The best sprinklers and a cool DIY sprinkler project

For those of us not lucky enough to have pools growing up, the best way to cool off during the dog days of summer was the humble lawn sprinkler. You’d hook it up to a hose and take turns leaping through its oscillating streams. Eventually some of us would graduate to Slip N’ Slides, which was essentially a long piece of plastic that we would cruise down on our bellies.

We’ve noticed this mind-blowing DIY project making the rounds in the blogosphere, and if the idea of building your own sprinkler sounds expensive and time-consuming, what if we told you all you need is an hour and a few bucks? Photographer Camille constructed this free-standing water sprinkler with PVC pipe and a few tools. The structure became  a neighbourhood attraction drawing kids from near and far to take turns riding their bikes and trikes through it (just like a car wash). She snapped photos for her blog. The how-to is right here on Instructables. Oh, and what do you know, here’s a video of the making-of, with sweet helmet cam footage.
