Sunday Morning

This Sunday: Oatmeal Sundaes and Autumn Leaf Pressing

Your Sunday Morning Plan

It’s still warm enough to play outside without freezing your face off, and just cool enough to crave something comforting and toasty. The perfect November Sunday morning consists of pressing fall leaves after enjoying an oatmeal sundae bar, we say!

Eat:

Kids can make their own masterpiece with this fun and interactive breakfast. Oatmeal is high in fibre, magnesium, and iron, and eating it actually lowers cholesterol and stabilizes blood-glucose levels. Most importantly, this whole grain breaky is a blank canvas for fun, and loading it up with fresh toppings provides an opportunity to maximize the health and taste factor.

For 4 servings of oatmeal:

  • 1 ½ cup large flake rolled oats
  • 3 ½ cup milk or milk substitute
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla (optional)

Combine all ingredients into a large pot, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes.

Send Letters Home From Camp With a DIY Stationary Kit

Catherine Romano blogs about crafty projects for kids and parents

With the start or summer, comes the beginning of summer camp, and some kids are about to embark on a special trip to overnight summer camp. As exciting as the experience can be, the occasion is often bittersweet – kids are growing up (and would rather spend most time with friends), and parents are no longer needed every single second of the day (what to do with all that extra time).

But one way to keep things lighthearted and mark the special excursion to sleepover camp, is with a letter writing kit. Filling a letter writing kit with fun and useful items will certainly encourage kids to put pen to paper, and take a moment to share fun experiences with parents.

Here is what I did for my letter writing kit:

Father's Day

Beer-Themed Father’s Day Craft

For The Beer Aficionado Dad

Here at Bunch we love dads. Like, love them. And in many cases, these dads love beer.  It may be a no-brainer to give dad some of his favourite potent potables to enjoy for Father’s Day, but we were determined to make the plain ol’ six-pack a little more special. If beer isn’t something your dad is into, you can easily replace it with root beer or any other bottled beverage. This craft from Charlotte’s Fancy is an awesome idea on how to personalize the bottle labels and carrier.  The messages your kids write on each bottle can read almost like a love letter to the awesome dads out there.

You’ll need:

  • six-pack of dad’s favourite bottled beverage
  • blank paper
  • colouring pencils or crayons
  • scissors
  • glue or double sided tape

Invisible Ink Father’s Day Card

  • One piece of white cardstock
  • One teaspoon of lemon juice (can be fresh or from concentrate) OR one teaspoon of baking soda mixed with one teaspoon of water
  • Small bowl
  • Small paintbrush or Q-Tip
  • One piece of colored cardstock, slightly larger than the white cardstock
  • Gluestick
  • Marker

Steps:

1. Place lemon juice (or baking soda and water mixture) in a small bowl

Bike Month

Pimp Your Bike Ride

June is Bike Month! Celebrate it in style.

Perhaps crocheting a cover for your bike is not a project you’d be willing to tackle, but there are lots of other great (and much easier) ideas to jazz up your bike in time for bike month.

The classic bike decor typically centers around strapping on a store bought coloured plastic basket and calling it a day. Cute enough, but we think you can do better with simple dollar store stuff or old toys and some hot glue.

You’ll need:

  • Basic bicycle basket
  • Plastic flowers
  • Feather Boa
  • Beads or necklaces
  • Other decorative items such as figurines, stuffed animals, toys, pom poms etc.
  • Hot glue or wire

Celebrating Cinco De Mayo in Style

Ola Amigos!

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over the French in 1862. What was once a regional celebration in Mexico has evolved into a much more widely known and celebrated event in the US and Canada. For many, its simply an excuse to indulge in excessive consumption of margaritas and nachos.

On that note, allow us to share with you some great ideas on how to celebrate this event with your family.

Virgin Margaritas

You’ll need:

  • 2 tablespoons kosher (coarse) salt
  • 1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 1 can (6 ounce size) frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 4 cups ice cubes

Method:

Rub rim of glasses with lime and dip in salt.  Blend all ingredients until smooth.  Pour into glasses, garnish with a lime wedge and serve!
