Read Aloud to Celebrate World Book Night

Pile yourself and all your kids into a big bed and read a story together

kids reading a book together in bed

It’s World Book Night! It’s a night where we celebrate our love of reading, and hope to foster that same love in other people too. In some cities, people will be going out distributing paperbacks in hope that these books will find good homes and their new owners will seek out more and more reading material.

While we don’t expect you to canvas the neighbourhood passing around old copies of Catcher in the Rye, you and the kids could go through their old pictures books and see if there are any that the kids could spare. Consider donating a few to a local women’s shelter.

We’re also really into Flavorwire’s idea of celebrating World Book Night, which is to find a book to read out loud.

Ben & Jerry’s Schweddy Balls and Other Delicious Dishes

We hear they’re very tender

We must confess, while we’ve always loved the classic SNL sketch and the Delicious Dish ladies in general (good times!), we’ve never had the urge to try Pete Schweddy’s balls. But now that Ben & Jerry’s have turned those Schweddy Balls into a flavour? Well, we trust Ben & Jerry’s a lot so we’re willing to give it a go.

But the Schweddy Balls got us thinking about other fictional (as yet) dishes from film and literature. The Hairpin came up with a pretty impressive list of tempting foods from the fictional world and we think they were bang-on with Edmund’s craving for Turkish Delight in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We’re not even going to include Butterbeer 1) because it’s a no-brainer and 2) because it exists now so if and when we ever get ourselves to Orlando, we will sit down for a pint at the Three Broomsticks.

Costume Recipe: Willy Wonka

Do you even need to ask who our preferred Willy Wonka is? Gene Wilder, duh.

You will need:

A brown top hat

A gold-topped cane (real gold, of course)

A ruffled dress shirt or vest

A purple velvet coat

Brown dress shoes

For an added touch, carry some candy with you (for the sake of people who don’t “get it” and really need to be hit over the head).
