1. What do you do when you write for a national magazine and your son sends you a letter from camp describing in detail the latrine conditions? If you’re Scott Feschuk, you publish it.
2. Tangled sequel! Out next spring! Well, they’re calling it a “mini sequel” as it’ll be a short film rather than feature-length. Still!
Between day camps and out-of-town visitors, sleepover camps and work commitments, summer’s not all lazy days at the lake. But with the kids off school for another five weeks and the sun shining outside, it’s the perfect opportunity to clear your schedule for an afternoon, a weekend or even a whole week, and get down to the serious business of becoming closer as a family. And no, a microwave pizza in front of Nickleodeon doesn’t count.
1. Is there anything funny about the way camp counsellors or fellow campers apply sunscreen? One Maryland camp sent home a sunscreen permission slip after the state sent out a memo about the DOs and DON’Ts of sunscreen application. So, is applying sunscreen to someone inappropriate or is it better to have your kid come home with a sunburn?
2. Do paraents get too into kids’ sports? One mom writes into the NYT Motherlode blog to say she’s discovered that there’s a lot of favourtism and unfairness going on in kids’ sports. (Plus a dad of a girl wants to punch Matt Lauer.)
3. Did you know Israel is the world capital for in vitro fertilization? And it’s free! (for two babies… sorry wannabe-Duggars who need a little help getting pregnant) Read more...
Catherine Romano blogs about crafty projects for kids and parents
With the start or summer, comes the beginning of summer camp, and some kids are about to embark on a special trip to overnight summer camp. As exciting as the experience can be, the occasion is often bittersweet – kids are growing up (and would rather spend most time with friends), and parents are no longer needed every single second of the day (what to do with all that extra time).
But one way to keep things lighthearted and mark the special excursion to sleepover camp, is with a letter writing kit. Filling a letter writing kit with fun and useful items will certainly encourage kids to put pen to paper, and take a moment to share fun experiences with parents.
Here is what I did for my letter writing kit:Read more...
1. The Giver, one of the best young adult novels ever, might finally be put on the big screen. Jeff Bridges originally acquired the film rights to it thinking that his dad, Lloyd Bridges could play the titular role, but now that he’s in his 60s, it’s just right for him. Did anyone else read The Giver and picture Shel Silverstein?
Books to get you pumped up, books to get you freaked out
The kids are two days away from freedom and unless you’re a germaphobe who would rather you and the kids spend all your time inside, no school = lots of time to run around outside. And what’s the quintessential outdoor activity? Camping. Now, some kids are just itching to get out, make campfires and pee on trees, but other kids, what with their constant electronic devices and wifi for everything, might need a little convincing that they can still have a blast living outside with no (or very little) electricity. No matter where on the hurray for outdoors spectrum you and your kids sit, we’ve found some books for the drive up to the campsite as well as some to have on hand in the tent.
Late August and early September is when we shop for school supplies, lament that the days are getting shorter and spend one last glorious long weekend at the cottage. As we prepare to put away our flip-flops and beach blankets, we remember all the crazy-awesome fun stuff we did at Camp Bunchland. From gourmet popsicles and s’mores to backyard movie theatres and campfires, summer 2010 will always be remembered as the best summer ever. Until we top it next summer, that is.
