Teachers Bullied Autistic Boy and His Dad Caught It All on Tape

Warning: This story is very disturbing

New Jersey dad Stuart Chaifetz was “stunned” to hear that his 10-year-old autistic son Akian was getting in trouble at school. Akian, who’d never exhibited any sort of violent behaviour before, was hitting his teacher and aide and having violent outbursts at school. His school, Horace Mann School, is considered to be one of the best schools in the States and one of those independent schools that parents are dying to get their kids into.

Since this behaviour was so uncharacteristic of the boy, his dad set up a meeting with the teachers and school therapists. A behaviourist even tried to create scenarios that would push Akian to his limits in order to see what would set him off. It didn’t work. So what would cause this peaceful boy to lash out?

Killer Codeine, Perceived Overweight Meanies and How Much Weight Should You Gain During Pregnancy?

What we’re reading today: did jessica simpson gain too much weight in her pregancy?

1. Know that super pregnant celebrity who’s been pretty heavily criticized for gaining a substantial amount of weight during her pregnancy? Is that normal and she’s just being criticized because it’s an atypical celebrity pregnancy, or should women not put on that much weight?

2. Speaking of weight perceptions, preschoolers think that overweight kids are mean. Looking at Harry Potter bullies Crabbe and Goyle, do kids get these ideas from TV and movies, or do writers get these ideas from kids?

3. Kids are dying after being prescribed codeine post-surgery. What’s going on?

4. What do you do when you’re a big bookworm and your kid just couldn’t care less about reading?

5. We really do hope everything works out for Courtney Love, but what’s with this feud with the Muppets? And attacking genius Jason Segel? Here’s what set her off:

News Round-Up Jan. 25: No Name Calling Week, the Trouble With School Choice and a Link Between Bullies and Obesity?

What we’re reading today:

1. So, despite everything we’ve heard in the last few years, a recent study has found no link between the availability of junk food in schools and obesity.

2. Over in the U.S., it’s School Choice Week. School Choice has some big supports like Bill Cosby and Pres. Obama, but critics say “opportunity is replaced with demands for universal “excellence” and “achievement,” in which teachers are punished for student “failure.” This pits parents against teachers, and it ultimately sidelines already marginalized children of immigrant families, poor children and/or children of color.”

3. After hearing crappy news from the Girl Scouts and discrimination, it’s great to hear that the Boy Scouts of America have embraced “No Name Calling Week.”  It’s an initiative started by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and in turns of inclusiveness and the war on bullying, it’s a step in the right direction.

Star Wars is Cool, Katie is Cool, But Bullies Are Not

A heartwarming story just in time for National Bullying Awareness Week

We’re getting a little misty-eyed reading this excellent anti-bullying essay by Chicago Now columnist Carrie Goldman.

Goldman’s daughter Katie loves the Star Wars. So when it came time for them to pick out a new lunch box and water bottle for the school year, Katie selected items from a galaxy far, far away.

Goldman writes that she used to think of bullying as a problem that affected older kids, but when Katie burst into tears insisting that she’d rather bring an old pink water bottle than her beloved Star Wars one, Goldman knew something was up.  Here’s an excerpt:

She wailed, “The first grade boys are teasing me at lunch because I have a Star Wars water bottle. They say it’s only for boys. Every day they make fun of me for drinking out of it. I want them to stop, so I’ll just bring a pink water bottle.”
