We only just enjoyed the special Mother’s Day message from Brave, and then discovered we’d missed this Kilt featurette from last week? This brief 40 second clip asks, “Are you Brave enough to wear a kilt?” We imagine this will appeal to our young cousin whose favourite part of WALL-E was when Wall-E put a woman’s bra over his eyes. Oh Pixar you masters of comic relief!
Have you noticed the absence of moms in Disney movies? The heroines, with the exception of Sleeping Beauty, either have a wicked stepmother, or their dad just hasn’t found a new wife. But Princess Merida from Brave seems to have a very present and loving mother in Queen Elinor. Could this be why Merida promises to kick so much ass?
We very much enjoyed this new Mother’s Day spot from Brave and June 22 just can’t get here fast enough.
We’re hoping that Merida is Katniss for the younger crew and that between Brave, Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman, we’re just going to keep on seeing movies about strong, brave young women. Also, this trailer finally gives us a little better idea as to what the movie’s actually about. Previously, we’d figured that each family had to send someone to compete in some sort of games (not Hunger Games games, more like A Knight’s Tale games), but it turns out that the men are competing for Merida’s hand in marriage and she’s like “Um, no, I can beat them all and so I shouldn’t have to marry any of these losers.” (Loose paraphrase)
What to watch if your kids aren’t into the kids-killing-kids realities of Panem
As we might have mentioned before, we loved The Hunger Games books and so were seriously anxious for the movie to open. A big part of why we love the Hunger Games is Katniss herself. For those who somehow escaped hearing all about this dystopian tale, it centres around 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen. She’s so brave and strong that, after losing her dad in a mining accident, takes it upon herself to hunt and forage for her family so they don’t all starve. Her braveness hits its peak when her little sister’s name is drawn to participate in the annual Hunger Games, where kids from various districts fight to the death, and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Yes, there’s a bit of young adult romance-y stuff happening, but at its core, it’s about Katniss surviving the games so she can get back to her family. Katniss makes for a great role model, but we understand that when other Hunger Games participants are speared, stabbed and bashed on the head, it’s not really family-friendly entertainment if your family is on the young side. We’re thinking Snow White and the Huntsman looks pretty kickass too, but again, it’s probably not for the kids. Read more...
After sending out a teaser trailer for Brave earlier this year, Disney Pixar has released the full version and it’s looking pretty promising. We’re guessing the plot is somewhere between Mulan and A Knight’s Tale. Kelly Macdonald plays the princess and we’re hoping that Kevin McKidd is the love interest because he’s so love interest-worthy, yet we can’t bring ourselves to watch him on Grey’s Anatomy. (We’d also be 100 percent OK if there is no love interest.) Plus her parents are Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly, Craig Ferguson makes an appearance and not only is Hagrid in there somewhere, so is Mrs. Weasley! (Makes sense all that red hair in the trailer, there’d have to be some Weasley involvement.)
