When Your Kid Comes Out as Gay, Why Kids Love Colours and Moms on Business Trips

1. Younger and younger kids are coming out as gay, but the support systems we currently have in place don’t really take 7-year-olds into account. What do you do when your young son or daughter tells you they’re gay, or they don’t tell you but you suspect as much? “The best things parents can do for both their straight and gay children is just not to presume anything about their kid’s sexuality — and to admit that, even early on, your kid has one. Talk openly — and casually! — about gay people,” says a lesbian woman who grew up in 1980s Kentucky.

News Round-Up Jan. 4: Sesame Street Losing Money, More Playtime for Underprivileged Kids and Less Shaming Overweight Kids

What we’re reading today:

1. What causes ADHD in kids? Could poverty and diabetes during pregnancy have anything to do with it?

2. A healthy living campaign in Georgia is fat-shaming kids. Somehow we think the childhood obesity crisis won’t be fixed by making kids feel bad.

3. The whole economic crisis thing just got real: Sesame Street is losing money.

4. Kids in poor neighbourhoods, despite not being crazy overscheduled with lessons and teams, are missing out on some crucial unstructured playtime. Get those kids to a (safe) playground!

We Can Totally See Batman Falling for Anne Hathaway

Our favourite character castings

With the internets abuzz with talk of Christopher Nolan’s über-anticipated follow-up to The Dark Knight, as well as speculation that Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire will join Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby, we couldn’t help but think our other favourite characters brought to life on the big screen.

For the record, we think Hathaway would be a great love interest for Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne, Mulligan will be a charming Daisy Buchanan, DiCaprio is so golden anyway and obviously works well with Luhrmann to be his Gatsby, but we are so not in favour of Maguire as Nick Carraway. Not that he’s a bad actor, but we just don’t see ourselves falling in love with him as we do with Fitzgerald’s Nick Carraway. Or Sam Waterston’s Carraway.

So in no particular order, here are some actors we thought did their characters justice:
