Add a little Banksy to your March Break

Illustrator and author Aaron Zenz has some seriously artistic kids. When Zenz and his family watched the Banksy documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, 10-year-old Gracie announced she was going to be a street artist too. (Zenz then had to explain why we can’t just go around vandalizing everything.)
But the Zenz kids were inspired! So they came up with something that, while not doing damage to anyone’s property, would be, “something artsy. Something stealthy. Something public.” And so they gathered a whole bunch of rocks and washed them. Then three Z-kids and the Z-dad each picked a colour and painted the rocks with various expressions of various levels of zaniness.

And then they set out to take their art public.

Check out some guerrilla art in your city

Famous and mysterious graffiti artist Banksy is up for an Oscar this weekend for his Exit Through the Gift Shop documentary and with mere days left until the little golden statues are handed out, a handful of new Banksy pieces have appeared in L.A. (Although it looks like he won’t make it to the actual ceremony since the Academy turned down his disguise request)
While we love museums and galleries, we also think introducing the kids to urban art makes for a great sunny day activity. Make a game plan and hit some key graffiti areas in your city, then retire to a coffee shop and have everyone share their favourite piece. You could also tape some butcher paper up on the wall and have the kids create a new mural. 10-year old Solveig is the new star of street art. She paints bright, playful graffiti murals in and around her native Brighton and has started an all-girl crew called, appropriately AGC (it’s made up of Solveig, her younger sister, two girls who live on her street and a new friend who just moved to the U.K. from China).
