Apple Picking in Canada

Late September is a time when apple orchards are pretty much begging to be ransacked by hungry families. Throw in a corn maze, a pumpkin patch and a hayride and you have yourself a dreamy weekend day trip. Because we can’t think of a better way to spend a beautiful weekend day, we’ve gone and found you a few places to get your apple picking on.

Rosh Hashanah Apple Heads

L’Shana Tova!

Last night at a family Rosh Hashanah dinner, Bunch founder Rebecca and her producer cousin Corey Marr had a simple yet genius way of keeping the kids entertained at the table: Apple Heads.

Rebecca and Corey used plasticine to make faces on the apples and gave one to each kid. The kids could then remake their apple heads, thus keeping them at the dinner table longer. We think grownups should also get in on the apple head caricature action. Kids sitting quietly at a holiday dinner? This year’s off to a sweet start indeed!

Need more apple crafts? Did you see Krista+Kids this week where they took on a Little House in the Big Woods-inspired pomander?

Little House Inspired Apple Pomander

Krista Rao blogs about crafty adventures with her kids

I LOVE the fall time. The cool crisp air, leaves changing colour, busting out the crockpot, long hikes and wearing slippers around the house. There is however one element of autumn that I really dislike THE SMELL. The smell of wet rotting leaves and wet dog paws tromping through the house sends me over the edge. Our solution: apples spiked with cloves… just like Laura and Mary made to freshen their home in Little House in the Big Woods (which we are currently reading and LOVING).

This activity was super easy, perfect for this apple picking season and was loved by everyone in the house (2.5 yrs to adult). Here is a little tutorial the kids and I put together:

Materials:

  • apples
  • whole cloves
  • something to poke tiny holes in the apples (toothpicks would do nicely)

This Is How We Like Them Apples

A recipe for vanilla apple sauce plus an apple recipe roundup

The first day of fall is tomorrow, and we plan to celebrate by eating something involving apples. Apples are as much a part of fall as pumpkins, mums and colourful leaves. If you guys have ever been apple-picking, you also know what it’s like to lug home a big basket of apples and then wonder how the heck you’re going to eat them all before they go bad. And as much as we want to adhere to the 100-mile diet, the fact is that sometimes we get pretty sick of eating apples. So creative ways to eat them are always welcome. We got a bunch of ideas for turning the humble apple into something mouth-watering or, in some cases, weird.
