Toronto Underground Cinema’s Top 5 Winter Sports Movies

Andrew Parker of the Toronto Underground Cinema’s picks for great winter sports movies

We are now, in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere anyway, firmly in the clutches of old man winter. The ponds are frozen. The toboggans have been dusted off. Ridiculously comfortable one piece snow suits are being donned by the little ones and the biggest sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl, is fresh in our memory.

Kids, however, are probably far more interested in playing sports than actually watching them on television. On top of that, they would probably love watching a movie about sports more than they would like to play them. So with that spirit in mind, here are my top 5 (technically 6) family-friendly winter sports movies.

Besides, the Super Bowl rarely ever takes place in over a foot of snow. What is so wintry about that?

5 Movies for a Snowy Day

Andrew J Parker of the Toronto Underground Cinema’s Bunchbrary:

Now that the “most wonderful time of the year” has passed us by, we’re left with what many to believe is one of the worst seasons of the year. The cold of winter might be reason enough to stay inside, but seeing snow is enough to make anyone think twice about going anywhere and hunkering down in front of the television with a good movie. Assuming that you aren’t already sick of the stuff and prefer seeing snow on television rather than outside your window, here are my top 5 snow related movies and/or scenes to watch with the family, some hot chocolate and a whole lot of marshmallows.

The 9 Best Holiday Shopping Movies

Andrew Parker of the Toronto Underground Cinema’s Bunchbrary

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The snow is just starting to fall. Christmas cookies are being baked for office parties and family get-togethers. Poinsettias are starting to show up in stores. Stores. Wait. Oh, no. I haven’t started shopping yet!

Don’t panic just yet. Save that panicking for the last Saturday before Christmas, but for now here are 10 movies to help get you and your family motivated to get out there and brave the crowds. These films offer key perspective and just might put your family in the right frame of mind to deal with something completely illogical: the Christmas shopping experience.
