News Round-Up September 12: SpongeBob Is Bad For You, Siblings Are Good For You and A Daughter’s Letter To Her Dad

What we’re reading today:

1. SpongeBob SquarePants! He lives in a pineapple under the sea! SpongeBob SquarePants! He could be giving you ADHD! OK, not quite, but one study seems to think that watching SpongeBob has an effect on kids’ attention spans and ability to stay on task. (The study pitted SpongeBob against Caillou and colouring)

2. Can you run with your kids? How far should they go?

3. Need a good cry this morning? Look no further.

4. “From the time we gain a brother or sister, they can be both our fiercest competitors and closest confidantes.” Siblings are uber-important; they’re some of the most important relationships of a person’s life. So take a minute or two to observe your kids playing together and enjoy.

5. Dog and baby try to eat some bubbles.

A New Picture Book Explains 9/11 To Kids + Read-A-Thon

And no, it wasn’t written by Fergie

It’s 10 years since two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, which, along with the attacks around Washington, D.C. killed nearly 3, 000 people. There probably won’t be much else reported this weekend other than remembering 9/11, so your kids might have some questions. How do you explain such a massive and terrible event to them?

Don Brown’s new book, America Is Under Attack, explain some of the events of that day in simple, straightforwards terms to young readers.

Would You Buy Your Kids a Book by the Duchess of York About 9/11?

Sarah Ferguson’s latest children’s book idea

Sarah Ferguson has already written a series of children’s books about a helicopter named Budgie and a couple of princess-y young adult novels, and has now created a children’s story that deals with the events of 9/11.

Three publishers she showed the outline of The Little Pear Tree to have rejected it, telling the Duchess of York that “Americans regard works of fiction about 9/11 as insulting.”

A spokesperson for Ferguson says she’ll publish it herself as an e-book. The book supposedly centres on a pear tree that was stripped of its branches after the attacks on the World Trade Towers. That the pear tree was nursed back to life was taken as a sign of hope and renewal.
