Hey Bunchkins!

We just went back through our Costume Recipe file and put them in one easy-to-find place. If you’re starting to scramble right about now, take a quick peek.

Necessity (and half-forgotten stuff hiding in the basement or storage locker) is the mother of invention.

1. Pee-Wee Herman!

We were big fans of the show and were technically too old to be watching it Saturday mornings. But we never missed it.

Costume Elements pictured above: red bow tie (use ribbon in a pinch), grey jacket or suit, white socks and shoes, and red lipstick for rouged cheeks and lips. A bit of gel to slick the hair back — and watch a few clips of Pee-Wee’s playhouse with your kid to get in the mood.

(Keep your eyes peeled for ringletted six-year-old Natasha Lyonne of Orange is the New Black )

2. Precocious Baby Beatnik?

You’ll need: fake stick-on goatee (or paint one on), black or grey turtleneck, some beads, sunglasses, a black beret and an empty coffee can if you don’t happen to have some bongos lying around.

Get inventive on this one – sub a floppy hat or head scarf instead of a beret. Take some inspiration from Suzuki Beane:

3. Willy Wonka!

Pretty easy, we think. A brown top hat (or any shaped hat), a cane, a dress shirt or vest, funky velveteen coat and brown shoes.

When in doubt, go with what you’ve got lying around.

Good luck!
