Since 826 National‘s storefronts are really a cover for their secret identities as not-so-mild-mannered tutoring centres, it seems appropriate that one of them should really run with that theme, and run they do. Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. is your one-stop-shop for everything a superhero needs. From grappling hooks to antimatter, from secret identity kits to invisibility powder, this crowded little store will keep crime fighters at the top of their game.

Moving through the shop, visitors can try on capes and then step up to a platform where large fans demonstrate each cape’s billowing potential. In one corner, there’s a holding cell for supervillains (or parents). In addition to being packed with fabulously designed fantasy products, shelves also display circulars advertising invisibility detection goggles (Astounding!) or sidekick placement services, two of the many products and services available only at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.

If you wish to buy, say, a one gallon jug of telekinesis or a can of x-ray vision, you’ll have to step up to the control booth, where you are obliged to swear a solemn vow of heroism: “I (your full name) also known as (your superhero name) promise always to use my superpowers for good. I promise that I will use the items purchased here today safely and in the name of justice. I promise to remain ever vigilant, ever true.” products and money change hands via a dumb waiter.

At the back of the store, a bookshelf is revealed to be a secret door, and this is where the real heroes are: 826NYC‘s volunteer tutors. Like all of 826 National’s centres, one on one tutoring is provided free of charge both in the store and at an outreach program in a local library. The centre also runs comic book and screenwriting workshops for kids. Finished screenplays are developed into short films which are shown at a benefit film festival each year. One more way for kids to see their hard work actualized and to encourage them to be the best writers they can be.
