Beloved writer Judy Blume announces her battle with breast cancer
Earlier today, Judy Blume revealed some sad news on the Twittersphere — the best-selling novelist was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this summer.
In a heartfelt post on her personal blog, Blume offers fans a report of her condition and initial shock:
“Wait – me? There’s no breast cancer in my family (recent extensive genetic testing shows no genetic connection). I haven’t eaten red meat in more than 30 years. I’ve never smoked, I exercise every day, forget alcohol – it’s bad for my reflux – I’ve been the same weight my whole adult life. How is this possible? Well, guess what – it’s possible.”
Blume underwent surgery and is now recovering from an invasive ductal carcinoma. Thankfully, she’s doing well. Now one month post-surgery, she’s blogs that she’s still in New York and feeling stronger every day, walking a couple miles in the park every morning and going to dinner with her husband.
Just like in her well-loved novels, Blume’s eloquence and wit shines in her post. She jokes that, like the small-breasted protagonist in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, “the (breast enhancing) exercises didn’t work for me.”
She concludes by wishing her fans well and reminding those affected by cancer that they’re not alone. ”Scary though it is, there’s a network of amazing women to help you through it.”
Amazing women like Blume herself. We’re wishing her a swift and easy recovery, and many more books to come.
