Simply put, hot chocolate is a family winter staple. And this winter, a necessity.

We’ve rounded up some extraordinary hot chocolate ideas to add extra fun to your favourite winter drink — and paired them with family movie classics for you and yours.

Hot Chocolate Idea #1:  Go Extravagant

PEANUT BUTTER HOT CHOCOLATE

ADD COCONUT MILK

If your kids have open-minded taste buds, add one part canned coconut milk to three parts regular milk for this ‘perfect’ and creamy hot chocolate recipe.

ADD PEANUT BUTTER

Chocolate and peanut butter is the best thing ever, right? So adding peanut butter to your hot chocolate is a no-brainer (unless there’s an allergy, obvi). This recipe requires slightly more effort than your regular mix-and-go — but it’s worth it.

ADD NUTELLA

Sometimes simple ideas are the best. All you do is heat milk, add Nutella and mix. Doesn’t get any better.

Pair with …

Like ‘scary’ movies? Get all vintage indieventurous with a 1985 Canadian classic: The Peanut Butter Solution

Or pair intense hot chocolate flavour with a movie about kids who are seriously intense about chocolate:

Hot chocolate idea #2: Old school is new school

Certain flavours evoke your own childhood (or that of your parents’!) like nobody’s business. Take your kids with you on a nostalgia trip.

ADD CONDENSED MILK

You know you loved the stuff as a kid, so why not add some oomph to your hot chocolate? It’ll be sweet.

USE OVALTINE!

Despite recent weird news reports, the old-school classic Ovaltine is not banned in Canada, — and most kids love it. The extra nutrients don’t hurt either, making it a slightly less guilty pleasure.

Bonus: Ovaltine has no caffeine, so you avoid the risk of winding them up if you’re indulging in the evening.

Pair with …

Sure, the holiday season is past, but A Christmas Story has the most awesome Ovaltine-inspired scene ever!

Hot Chocolate Idea #3:  Go Healthy!

Okay, so maybe this isn’t exactly healthy, but it’s on the yummy side of carob-chip hot chocolate.

MAPLE SYRUP COCOA

If you’re starting with cocoa powder, use maple syrup to sweeten your hot cocoa instead of refined sugar.

Pair with …

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. Why? Because maple syrup makes us think about sugar bush season, spring and trees.
And we all know who speaks for the trees …

Meri Perra is a bit of a hot chocolate afficionado, apparently.
