Bunchland is kicking down your front door and invading your home sweet home. Well, after you’ve politely invited us in, served us tea and offered to show us your family’s treasures.
- CITY: Hillcrest Village, Toronto, Canada
- OUR BUNCH: Colin, 39, founder/owner of Green Garage. Camilla, general manager of the Tarragon Theatre. Natalie, 6, self-taught avid reader. Rebecca, 4, goofball who enjoys being silly/doing dressup/getting her sister to laugh.
Colin’s family had an old garage built in the ’50s behind their house, which they never parked their car in because the only thing holding it up, according to Colin, was “willpower.” One year after a particularly heavy snowfall the roof started caving in, and the family tore the garage down with plans to rebuild. Colin had been doing some reading about green roofs, and after getting some pricey quotes from different companies, he decided to do it himself (and recorded the process on his blog).
Colin now helps others design and install their own green roofs with his company, Green Garage. He says green roofs are great for insulating homes and keeping them cool in the summer, meaning you need to run the A/C less. They protect the house from ultraviolet radiation, which can break down traditional roofs over time (leading to expensive replacements). Green roofs also provide a habitat for butterflies and bees, and a bonus for Colin’s family is now their garden is twice as big. Colin has a nice view of the garage roof from his office, and he says plants and flowers provide a much nicer view than a sea of shingles.
