Last year, we came up with a pretty good plan for hosting a kid-friendly Oscar party, if we do say so ourselves. The host has changed, the movies obviously are new, but for the most part, same ol’ Oscar party. Don’t forget to point out to your kids that the host, Billy Crystal, is actually Miracle Max in disguise. So play red carpet fashion show, make some classic popcorn boxes and let’s think about some best picture homages, in snack form.
Going through the list, we feel we should tell you that our first instinct for like half of the best picture nominations was croissants, but we’ve tried to branch out a bit from buttery pastries.
The only really kid-friendly best picture nom is Hugo, so we’ll start with that. Is War Horse kid-friendly? It’s based on a children’s book but we haven’t seen it yet. Read more...

You’ve carefully found a theme and some great activities for your kid’s birthday party. You and the birthday boy or girl have negotiated a menu that’s fun without being all sugar. Invites are out and now all that’s left to decide is the loot bags. Arrrrgh loot bags. Like you really want to buy character-branded plastic bags and fill them with random dollar store items, right? Like other parents really want more of that stuff lying around. Like the kids will play with that stuff for more than five minutes before it gets lost in the crack of the couch. Not to worry, we’ve thought of a few alternatives :

There’s something special about hosting your kid’s birthday party in his or her own backyard but what the heck are you going to do to entertain the hordes until their parents come pick them up? Look no further, friends. We’ve got your back.
Have you seen our new party blog? The following post was originally published on Today’s Parent:
Bunchland.com ‘s Creative Director Rebecca Brown has a daughter named Rose. She loves princesses and dolls. Following a trip to the emergency room with a cut finger, she’s also fixated on hospitals. For Rose’s third birthday, her parents wanted to create a memorable experience for Rose and her friends that incorporated all of Rose’s interests. They came up with a concept and a totally doable way to execute their idea. So if you have a princess baby doll lover in your family, this party might work for you, too.
We’re pretty blown away by the idea that a human first went into space 50 years ago today. Definitely a good reason to party. So who was this Yuri Gagarin? Here’s the basics and a few fun factoids about the Russian cosmonaut who took a 108 minute trip to outer space back in 1961. Sadly, Gagarin died during a test flight while prepping for his planned second journey into outer space. We honour his memory and his tremendous accomplishment by throwing a party in his name every April 12. That party is Yuri’s Night and there are Yuri’s Night parties going on all over the world. Even and especially on the International Space Station where at time of publication, the astronauts on-board are talking to the New York Times about the lasting memory of Yuri Gagarin.
Watch the 83rd Annual Academy Awards with your kids
You’ve watched all nominated films (or two of them), you’re curious to see what James Franco and Anne Hathaway have planned and you’ve made bets with your pals as to whether or not Natalie Portman will break out her bizarre laugh. The show itself doesn’t officially start until 8:00 p.m., and we can barely stay awake for the Best Picture announcement, never-mind the kids staying up that late, so why not kick things off early with a pre-pre-game and get everyone involved in cheering on their favourite movies and starlets. (Official pre-game here meaning armchair fashion criticism)
Here’s how to get everyone involved in Hollywood’s biggest night:
Assemble a bunch of dress-up clothes: Old Halloween costumes, sunglasses, random sequined items, clutch purses, oodles of costume jewelry, sashes, ties and vests or jackets
The wisdom of the day states that kids need at least an hour of physical activity every day. When the weather’s cold, or worse, when the weather keeps shifting from warm and melty to freezing and slippery, it can be hard to find great outdoor activities.
So what do you do when your bouncing-off-the-wall kid has a winter birthday? If you’d like an alternative to renting out an indoor play gym and you’re all skated out, why not stage a Nerf battle?
That’s exactly what our pal Melissa in Ohio did for her son’s birthday.
Using Melissa’s party for inspiration, here’s how to have a great Nerf Battle birthday: Read more...
When you send the invitations, make sure you inform the parents that the kids will be running around outside and therefore need to be dressed appropriately. (Something they can run around in, waterproof boots, nothing too fancy, hats and mitts)
